Beeswax from Dutch bees: why we choose wax from close to home

Bijenwas van TheWootz op een houten tafel

Our beeswax comes from Dutch bees. Wax that goes on a cutting board touches your food: then you want to know what is in it and where it comes from. The shorter the route, the easier that is to keep track of.

A jar or block of wax rarely says more than the word beeswax. For a piece of furniture that is often enough. For a board you cut bread on, you ask different questions.

Why origin matters for a cutting board

Everything you spread on a cutting board comes into contact with your food sooner or later. That is why, with care products, we look at two things first: what is in it and where does it come from. For our beeswax the answer to the second question is short. From Dutch bees.

A short distance makes a product easy to oversee. The closer to home, the easier it is to say where something comes from. That fits how we work: our boards are made by hand in a training workshop in Friesland. You can read more about that in our story.

One ingredient that you know

The wax block is 100% pure beeswax. It contains one ingredient. You do not have to read through a list to know what you are rubbing onto your board. For something that touches your food, that is a reassuring thought.

The same idea is behind our care oil: 100% grapeseed oil, with no additives. Oil and wax are both food safe.

How to use the two kinds

Wax block Spreadable beeswax
Form Solid block of pure beeswax 50 g aluminium tin
Applying Rub straight onto the wood, along the grain Spread thinly with a soft cloth
Cloth needed? No, buffing afterwards is fine Yes
Food safe Yes Yes

For both, the wood must be clean and dry. Give the board oil first and let it soak in. Then comes the wax. It stays on the surface, seals the pores and keeps moisture out.

The spreadable beeswax is good for dozens of treatments. You only need a little each time.

What wax does not do

Wax does not feed the wood. That is the job of the oil. If you only use wax, you have a board that shines on the outside and dries out on the inside. The difference between the two is on the page Beeswax for wood. You will find the fixed rhythm for the oil in the care guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where does TheWootz beeswax come from?

From Dutch bees. That goes for the wax block and for the spreadable beeswax.

What is in the wax block?

Only beeswax. The wax block is 100% pure beeswax and so consists of one ingredient.

Can beeswax go on a board that I cut food on?

Yes. Both kinds are food safe. After applying it you can simply use the board.

Can I order the beeswax together with the oil?

Yes. The care duo contains the care oil together with the beeswax or the wax block. That way you have the two steps at home in one go.
