Which size of care oil do you need? From 20 to 500 ml
Allow 20 ml of oil per board each time, twice a month. With one board, 250 ml lasts you about six months and 500 ml about a year. A small 20 ml bottle is exactly one treatment.
The care oil comes in glass bottles of 20, 40, 100, 200, 250 and 500 ml. It is always the same oil: 100% grapeseed oil, with no additives. Which bottle suits you depends on how much wood you have and how often you oil it.
The sum
A board gets oil twice a month. Each time you use 20 ml. That is 40 ml a month for one board. A new board gets a generous layer the first time, which can soak in overnight. Keep that in mind for your first bottle.

Which bottle suits you?
- You want to try it first. Take 20 ml. That is one treatment. Also handy as a little extra with a board you give as a gift.
- You have one board. With 250 ml you have enough for about half a year.
- You have several boards or a butcher block. Take 500 ml. A butcher block needs more oil because of its thickness and its sides.
- You are somewhere in between. You will find the 40, 100 and 200 ml bottles under care.
More wood than just a cutting board
The oil is suitable for every type of wood: beech, oak, acacia and bamboo. If you also oil your wooden spoons and serving boards, a bottle runs out sooner. Two boards means twice as much oil. So count all the wood that you treat regularly.
If the wood feels dry or turns dull, you oil a little sooner. That adds up too. If you cook a lot and wash up often, you are better off choosing a size bigger.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil do I use each time?
20 ml per board. Rub the oil out thinly with a cloth, over the edges and the underside too. Leave it to soak in for 4 hours and wipe away what is still on top.
Is 20 ml enough for a new board?
A new board gets a generous layer the first time. That takes more than a normal treatment. So for a new board it is better to take a bigger bottle.
How much oil does a butcher block need?
More than a cutting board. The butcher block is 6 cm thick and has four high sides. Read more in Oiling a butcher block: how often and how do you do it?
Is there a difference in the oil between the sizes?
No. Every bottle contains the same grapeseed oil. Only the contents differ.
